Rēzekne City receives 6th place in investment attraction category in European Cities and Regions of the Future ranking

February 25, 2018

On February 12th edition of the British newspaper Financial Times fDi Magazine published the results of European Cities of the Future 2018/19 ranking. Rēzekne City has received the 6th place in the category FDI Strategy among micro cities, due to planned Rēzekne City Council infrastructure development projects in the territory of Rēzekne SEZ and achievements and advantages of Rēzekne SEZ.

The study evaluated European cities in categories of large, mid-sized, small and micro cities, assessing economic potential, human resources, business friendliness, cost efficiency, foreign direct investment attraction strategy and connectivity. Assessment was made collecting the information on Europe’s cities and regions, their achievements and statistical data in the recent years, as well as implemented initiatives for investment attraction and promotion of growth.

Rēzekne City was recognized as the 6th best among micro cities (up to 100 thousand inhabitants) in category “FDI Strategy”. Altogether study evaluated 146 applications. The best in this category was Ireland’s city Limerick. Alongside Rēzekne awards were also granted to Latvia’s cities Ventspils and Valmiera.

Evaluating foreign direct investment attraction strategy of cities and regions large role is played by available support mechanisms and implemented initiatives for investment attraction. In context of Rēzekne it is support available for investors, which is ensured by Rēzekne Special Economic Zone: favourable tax incentives, as well as consultative support in implementation of investment projects and further work of the enterprise. Projects for entrepreneurship infrastructure development implemented by Rēzekne City Council and Rēzekne Municipality are also very important for investment attraction. In scope of these projects it is planned to ensure potential investors with access to public infrastructure, as well as to build production and storage premises that would be available for long-term lease.

It is a great pleasure for Rēzekne SEZ, that this achievement has been possible due to work of Rēzekne SEZ in investment attraction and development of Rēzekne. Furthermore this achievement has been promoted by initiatives implemented by Rēzekne SEZ and its cooperation partners, as well as Rēzekne SEZ examples of success in foreign direct investment attraction – enterprises “NewFuels” RSEZ SIA and “Energy Resources CHP” RSEZ SIA.
